Colombian Christmas
By Penelope Conde

On December 24th all the members of every Colombian family get together to celebrate Christmas. After 7:00pm the family starts to sing Christmas carols and the children receive typical candies; this party is called the Ultima Novena, which means "the last party". This means it is the last party of nine that are celebrated in December.
During the night people burn gunpowder and throw small aerostatic balloons. These are made with special paper. These balloons can have cow or bear shapes, for example, and are thrown to the sky.
he most typical dish is pernil de cerdo, which means a pork legs. Another is a candy made with milk and panela (smashed sugar cane) that is called manjar blanco.
On the streets some people dress up like Santa Clous, and at 12:00 am fire works start at the main Plaza of Colombia, to announce that Jesus has been born. Children go bed and anxiously wait for the next day to receive their presents from Santa beside the Christmas tree.
In Cali, a city in Colombia, a yearly party starts on December 25th and finishes on January 5th. People go to concerts to hear Colombian singers and they dance salsa and have lots of fun. Also, people can enjoy bullfighting. I think that Christmas is like a long
celebration.
